A ruler that stands up

This page loads the ruler in vertical mode: a tall scale running down your screen, sized to your viewport rather than a fixed strip, with metric or inch graduations selected from the toolbar. Stand a small object on the desk against the bottom bezel, hold a card or photo to the glass, or measure vertical distances inside a design, and read the height straight off the scale. The Corner layout adds the horizontal ruler back for measuring both axes at once, and the measure box reports width and height together for objects held flat against the screen.

Bottles, figurines, plants, candles, boxes: anything photographed standing up is sized by its height, and a vertical scale measures it the way the listing describes it. Stand the object against the screen's lower edge and read up.

Phones and rotated monitors

On a phone held normally, the long axis is vertical, so a vertical ruler uses the full length of the display, often half again more range than the horizontal scale on the same device. The capacity readout shows exactly how much you have.

How tall is the vertical ruler?

It sizes itself to your screen, using about two thirds of the viewport height and growing with fullscreen mode: typically 12 to 20 cm on a laptop, more on a desktop monitor, and on a phone in portrait it is the longest scale the device can show. The ruler-length readout displays the current capacity exactly.

Can I show vertical and horizontal rulers together?

Yes, choose Corner in the layout switch: the vertical scale sits along the left edge and the horizontal along the top, sharing their zero at the corner, which is the natural setup for measuring an object's width and height in one placement. The measure box does the same job with a single draggable rectangle.

Is the vertical ruler as accurate as the horizontal one?

Identical: both scales are drawn from the same calibrated pixels-per-inch value, so one calibration against a bank card serves every layout. Pixels on modern displays are square, which is why a single calibration covers both axes; keep browser zoom at 100% as always.

How do I measure something taller than the screen?

Measure in stages, marking your place on the object, or print the paper ruler and take the measurement physically. Past roughly half a metre a real tape measure is the honest recommendation, and this site will keep saying so.
